Troy, Mich.- based BNP Media’s Architectural Record brand is sponsoring The University of Michigan’s Venice Architecture Biennale exhibition of “The Architectural Imagination” at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD). Opened February 11, the exhibit will run until April 16, 2017 at MOCAD, located at 4454 Woodward Avenue.
Organized by the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning by request of the U.S. State Department, “The Architectural Imagination” features speculative architectural projects designed for specific sites in Detroit that could have applications around the world.
The exhibit, which premiered at the 2016 Venice International Architecture Biennale, now makes its first stop in the United States in the city that inspired its contributors. As explained on the exhibit’s web site, as advocates of the power of architecture to construct culture and catalyze cities, curators Cynthia Davidson and Monica Ponce de Leon selected twelve visionary American architectural practices to produce new work that demonstrates the creativity and resourcefulness of architecture to address the social and urban issues of Detroit in the 21st century.
Davidson and Ponce de Leon selected the exhibit’s 12 teams of architects from among more than 250 submissions. Chosen with the help of an 11-member Detroit advisory, the sites re-envisioned include parcels along the Dequindre Cut/Eastern Market, the US Post Office site on the riverfront, a lot in Mexicantown and the Packard Plant. Moreover, the architects worked with Detroit residents to solicit and understand community ideas for the locations.
“At the time when so many exciting developments are taking shape in Detroit, from restoring gems of our past to the M-1 RAIL line and the Red Wings arena and district, BNP Media and its Architectural Record brand are privileged to have the world’s design and urban planning spotlight put on our City. Through imagination and working together, we can come to inhabit an invigorating urban environment,” said BNP Media co-CEOs Harper, Mitchell and Taggart Henderson.
