19th Annual Food Safety Summit Makes An Impact on Food Safety Professionals

Donation by sponsor BNP Media, on behalf of attendees,  to Feeding America Coalition was highlight of event

The 19th Annual Food Safety Summit, held May 8 – May 11, 2017 in Rosemont, IL, attracted nearly 1,700 food safety professionals and 190 exhibiting companies.  The outstanding attendance at this event each year reflects the importance of safety and professional education to the food growing, processing, packaging, distribution and retail industries.

Among the full schedule of presentations and seminars at the event, attendees discussed important issues like the implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act and the Integration of the Nation’s Food Safety System, while also reviewing case studies of recent foodborne illness outbreaks.

The success of the event also shows the commitment to feeding the nation with quality foods.

As in years past, a highlight of the event was the Gives Back Networking Reception to benefit Feeding America.  BNP Media National Sales Manager Chuck Wilson presented a donation of $8,000 to Mitzi Baum, Director of Food Safety for Feeding America, on behalf of Summit sponsors, speakers, exhibitors and attendees.  This donation will provide 90,000 meals, as the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization works to feed America’s hungry, including children and seniors, through a nationwide network of food banks.

“The food industry, its people, companies and organizations respect the complex issues that result in too many Americans going hungry,” Wilson said.  “In keeping with the mission of the Food Safety Summit, we want to be part of the solution to this unfortunate reality.  In particular, we want to help those most vulnerable in our society, including the young and the elderly.”

Other highlights of the Summit included:

  • Presentation of the 2017 Sani Professional Food Safety Advisory Council Sani Awards to Tracey McClure, Food Safety Specialist & Training Dept. Administrator, Jason’s Deli; Jeremy Benedict, Quality Improvement and Training Coordinator, ASC of SUNY Cortland and Therese O’Connor, Asst. Director Training & Development, Cornell Dinning.
  • Presentation of the 2017 NSF Food Safety Leadership Lifetime Achievement Awards to Jack Guzewick, Trainer/Consultant; Lee-Ann Jaykus, PhD, North Carolina State University; and David Theno, PhD, Gray Dog Partners.

BNP Media co-CEOs Harper, Mitchell and Taggart Henderson emphasized that the Food Safety Summit is a valuable resource for food growers and scientists, processors, packagers, distributors and retailers.

“Trade conferences like the Annual Food Safety Conference & Expo are just one way that BNP Media works to connect entities within the food, beverage and packaging industries, helped them reach their intended audiences, as well as generating new ideas that benefit the food industry,” the co-CEOs said.  “We are also privileged to work with this industry to help highlight and solve the issue of hunger in America, and elsewhere.”

The 2018 Food Safety Summit, marking the event’s 20th anniversary, will again be held at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois, from Monday, May 7 through Thursday, May 10, 2018.  In addition, BNP Media will sponsor the Food Safety Summit Education Theater at PROCESS EXPO taking place September 19-22, 2017 at the McCormick Place Convention Center, Chicago, Ill.
